Production of a proprietary microcarrier for Spheramine™. Spheramine™,
is a cell based product for the treatment of Parkinson's disease,
which utilize non-embryonic, human retinal pigment epithelial (RPE)
cells. RPE cells produce dopamine, a neurotransmitter that is lacking
in certain brain regions in Parkinson's disease. The product consist
of human RPE cells adhered to this proprietary microcarrier which
allow for the long term survival and function of cells that are
implanted into the mammalian central nervous system. Murine and
primate animal studies have demonstrated the ability of a single
treatment to significantly reverse Parkinson's like symptoms up
to one year. In a report,
presented at the 55th Annual meeting of American Academy of Neurology,
major improvements were found in a group of six patients with advanced
Parkinson disease. View and downloand press releases, PDF-files,

European Craft Project,
Bio-artificial Pancreas
Industrial partners: Percell Biolytica (Sweden), Computer
Cell Culture Centre (Belgium), Laboratoire Perouse Implant (France),
Statice Sante (France) and Medisolve (Germany).
Research partners: Centre Europeen d Étude du Diabete (France),
Université Libre de Bruxelles (Belgium), Centre de Transfert de
Technologie du Mans (France), Universite Catholique de Louvain (France)
and Universita Degli Studi di Pisa (Italy).
The project aim was to develop a small scale prototype of bio-artificial
pancreas usable in the human. The bio-artificial pancreas will be
made of Langerhans islets (responsible for insulin secretion in
pancreas) packed in a capsule made of a complex support and a semi
permeable membrane. The Langerhans islets can either be used intact
or dissociated into individual cells. Download a project summary,
